Prehistorical settlement of great significance(8 km SE of Nafplio). Swedish excavations revealed the relics of the fortifications dated back to the 2nd millennium and 3rd B.C. century. During the Mycenean times it was connected by road with Mycenae and it must have composed the main seaport of the king of Mycenae.

In 740 B.C. Asini was destroyed by the people of Argos and the residents settled in the homonymous town in Sparti. During the Hellenistic times Asini is founded again and its walls are reconstructed.

The archaeological site of Asini, mentioned by Homer, consists of the acropolis built on a triangular hill in touch with the sea, the surrouning area and the hill of Barbouna in the West. The excavations brought to light Protohellenistic, Middlehellenistic, Mycenean, Geometrical, Archaic and Hellenistic settlements as well as corresponding cemetaries and the important Mycenean necropolis of Barbouna. The walls of the acropolis with the big castle date back to the Hellenistic era(3rd B.C. century). They have been reconstructed during the Byzantine times.

The excavatory research in ancient Asini was carried out by the Swedish Arcaeological Expedition from 1922 until 1930, in acropolis as well as in the mycenean cemetary. The excavations went on from 1970 and on by the Greek Archaeological Service and the Swedish Archaeological Institute.
