The church was built by the soldier of the emperor Markianos and later emperor Leon the first. According to the byzantine tradition, Leon while wandering next to the river Erasinos, met a blinded man who wanted to die his thirst down. Then the voice of Virgin Mary was heard suggesting Leon that the water he
was looking was in front of him. He guided the blind man to the spring who found his light after he washed his face with it. Ever since many sicnesses have been healed by the water and in the name of her grace, Virgin Mary.
