The first time I listened to Fad Gadget's Ricky's hand, I was impressed not only with the simplicity of the track, but also with the message at the back of the 7" single, which clearly stated : "IMPORTANT - Only synthetic sound sources have been used in the making of this disc (excluding a Black & Decker V8 double speed electric drill). The illustration at the back, made things even more interesting. Absurdly minimal, yet incredibly moving, that's what it was. This weird song was created by Fad Gadget (real name Frank Tovey) & Daniel Miller, -the big boss of Mute records- who started the record company, working on similar material himself. From that moment on, I became a big Fad Gadget fan. I collected all of his records and singles, and even when he decided to move away from electronic music, he never stopped impressing me. Firesite Favourites, Incontinent, Under the Flag, Gag, Civilian and Sam Hall are only a few of the albums he created. In 2001 Frank toured with Depeche Mode, and started working on new material. Sadly, on April the 3rd, Frank Tovey died, from a heart attack. According to friends of his, Frank had always had heart problems. The only consolation is that I still have the treasure that he left behind. Frank, Rest In Peace, We'll miss you.
